About Sydney Tanner
My love with the water started when I was about 4 years old. Back then we would drop a line off the jetty at Wynnum, a seaside suburb of Brisbane QLD with dreams of landing "The Big One". Fishing became a must activity for me from that moment on. Moving to Hervey Bay in the early 1970’s I quickly discovered the good fishing spots from the bad ones.
A short time after arriving in Hervey Bay I met Glen Thompson, who put me through my first SCUBA Diving course and from then on I found it hard to stay out of water. In the mid 1980’s I was offered work in the Solomon Islands with a mining company where I spent 5 months working in and around Honiara. Naturally, when stuck in such a wonderfully exotic place for such a period and with such a love of diving, I took every opportunity to dive the various war ships, planes and anything else under water around the island group.
Over the next few years I dived the waters around New Zealand, Hawaii, the USA and much of the Great Barrier Reef. My next passion, photography was made all the more enjoyable when I acquired my first underwater camera. My friends would often ask “what is down there?”, which prompted me to produce my first DVD showcasing the underwater world that is the Roy Rufus Artificial Reef & the wonderful Fish, Coral & Plant life of Hervey Bay waters.
